ABSTRACT
Important new technologies influence society and society, in turn, shapes the technologies. We are in the midst such an interplay as the Internet develops around us. I will review the basics of the technology, and the history of the Internet and efforts of Wall Street and Washington to control it. I end with a discussion of current research on optical packet switching.
